Faculty Development Programme on "Structural Analysis"

Date 12th to 13th January, 2018
Department Civil Engineering
Structural Analysis is major subject of civil engineering that evaluates the different loads on structures and their effects. Structural analysis employs the fields of applied mechanics, materials science and applied mathematics to compute a structure's deformations, internal forces, stresses, support reactions, accelerations and stability. The results of the analysis are used to verify a structure's fitness for use. Structural analysis is thus a key part of the engineering design of structures.

Course Outcomes:
Analyze structures to find out the internal forces such as axial force, shear force, bending moment, twisting moments, etc.

Evaluate the displacements / deflections in beams and frames under the action of loads. They will be able to obtain the response of the beams under the action of moving loads.

Analyze the structures such as arches and suspension bridges and study the behaviour of eccentrically loaded columns. Analyze the section with respect to unsymmetrical bending and shear centre.

Course Content:
Axial force, shear force and bending moment of frames, General theorems and its application to simple structures, Deflection of Statically Determinate Structures Using Geometrical Methods, Deflection of Statically Determinate Structures Using Methods Based on Energy Principle, Rolling Load and Influence Lines for Statically Determinate Structures, Three Hinged Elastic Arches, Cables, Suspension bridges and Three Hinged Stiffening Girder, Columns and Struts, Unsymmetrical bending, Shear Centre.
